Four open-rank tenure-track positions are open for individuals whose research agendas encompass scholarship and creative activity related to the continent and/or peoples of Africa, the African diaspora, and/or the African-American experience. Individuals appointed to these positions will have tenure in one of the College’s 21 Departments or Schools and will also be expected to make substantive contributions to the mission of the College’s Interdisciplinary Program in Africana Studies (visit http://web.utk.edu/~africana), including teaching undergraduate Africana Studies courses. The School of Music particularly encourages applications for these positions from qualified individuals pursuing research agendas pertaining to any musics of Africa or the African diaspora, with backgrounds in ethnomusicology, historical musicology, or the cultural anthropology of music (visit http://web.utk.edu/~musicol/index.html). Applicants must be able to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity-related and intercultural aspects of the University’s educational mission and must demonstrate promise of distinguished scholarship and creative activity, and a commitment to excellent teaching. Instrumental Conductor

Lead two instrumental ensembles, a Chamber Orchestra (currently 20 members) and a Wind Symphony (40 members), each of which rehearses weekly and performs at least one concert per semester. The ensembles include both student and community musicians, and the candidate must be able to effectively conduct students with varying ability levels. Additional teaching responsibilities include one course per semester. Candidate must be able to teach music theory up through diatonic tonal harmony; other courses may include a specialty of the candidate, conducting, introduction to music, or as needed to cover departmental offerings. Faculty members typically have the opportunity periodically to develop a course in an area of their interest in an interdisciplinary First-Year Seminar program and to teach the departmental Senior Seminar, a capstone course which rotates among our faculty and offers additional opportunity for course development. Doctorate, Artist’s Diploma, or equivalent professional experience required; ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate a track record of success in, and strong commitment to, teaching music within the context of a liberal arts education. Experienced theory and aural skills teacher to teach undergraduate theory/aural skills sequences and other music courses as needed; contribute significantly to the Integrative Liberal Studies program; other duties as assigned. Ph.D. in music theory required; experience and strong commitment to teaching theory and aural skills at the undergraduate level; interdisciplinary teaching experience preferred; knowledge of popular, commercial, and jazz styles and familiarity with computer-assisted instruction in music theory and aural skills strongly preferred; piano skills preferred. Begin August 2010. We invite applications from composers rooted in the American scene who represent a broad range of aesthetics and backgrounds and who will reach out to other creative artists at Harvard and beyond. Teach the equivalent of four courses a year at the undergraduate and graduate levels. A strong doctoral record or a proven track record of excellence in instruction at the university level is required. The department seeks to appoint a tenured professor in composition. Assistant Professor in Ethnomusicology

Teach five courses and supervise two non-Western ensembles taught by specialists; teaching load includes an introductory course in World Music, a theory and methods course in Ethnomusicology, and three additional courses commensurate with expertise and departmental needs; if appropriate, leading a non-Western ensemble may be considered part of the teaching load. Candidates should hold the Ph.D. and show evidence of ethnomusicological research as indicated by scholarly presentations and publications; area of specialization is open; preference will be given to candidates with at least two years of teaching experience; should be committed to working in an undergraduate liberal arts environment; experience teaching courses in music theory and aural skills is desirable.
