Our Mission

Founded at Columbia College Chicago in 1983, the Center for Black Music Research is the only organization of its kind. It exists to illuminate the significant role that black music plays in world culture by serving as a nexus for all who value black music, by promoting scholarly thought and knowledge about black music, and by providing a safe haven for the materials and information that document the black music experience across Africa and the diaspora.

1913 Earl Bostic (saxophonist and arranger) born in Tulsa, Okla.
1918 Ella Fitzgerald (jazz singer) born in Newport News, Va.
1923 Albert King (bluesman) born in Indianola, Miss.
1945 Teddy Weatherford (jazz pianist and bandleader) died in Calcutta, India

Spring 2017 Hours:  Monday – Thursday, 10 am to 4 pm; Friday 10 am to 1 pm. Until 5pm, by appointment.

Jazz Initiative February 16! 3:30p Join us for an open mic event in our Reading Room. Jazz, the Civil Rights Movement & the Revolution! is this month's theme. Free food, free admission, open to the public.
