Roots and Routes: Weekly Personal Narratives of Poverty and Privilege

Throughout the 2007-08 school year, Critical Encounters, in partnership with the Columbia Chronicle http://www.columbiachronicle.com/paper/index.php will present a column titled “Roots and Routes: Weekly Personal Narratives of Poverty and Privilege.”  These will be concise personal narratives drawn from within our community, from a cross-section of faculty, staff, and students who represent the diverse population on our campus. These voices will provide us with perspectives that cut across ethnicity, class, economic status, gender, generation, and nationality. Each contributor will present a personal narrative that will highlight their experience with poverty and/or privilege by tracing out their roots (where they’ve been) and their routes (where they’re going).

The “Roots and Routes” column will bring Critical Encounters to our community in a way that is immediate and personal.  The narratives will forge connections with readers who will see and perhaps relate to real journeys through the rigors and challenges of poverty in its various states (economic, spiritual, mental, issues of access).  Readers will consider various reflections of what privilege can mean for a wide range of individuals, and what it can or cannot do in terms of educational, employment, nationalistic, and artistic opportunities.
