Part Time New Faculty Orientation
"Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself."
We are pleased to add our voices to those welcoming you to the Columbia College Chicago community.* You are joining a unique, dynamic, creative, and exhilarating environment for teaching and learning. Your presence will make a genuine difference here, and we look forward to meeting you during New Faculty Orientation.
The Dance Center, 1306 S. Michigan Avenue
Saturday, August 29, 2009, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Please see the agenda for more information.
Your full participation in this orientation for new adjunct faculty is expected and valued.
Recognizing that an authentic orientation to a complex teaching and learning community cannot be packaged within a few hours, we encourage you to participate in seminars and workshops offered by the Center for Teaching Excellence throughout the year. Visit our website often for current postings about these programs and for other resources for faculty.
The two quotations at the top of this page echo a philosophy that runs deep in the Mission and Purpose of Columbia College and which is reflected in the qualities of our faculty who work professionally at the subjects they teach, and our students, who will author the culture of their times. As we begin the encounters that will shape our academic year together on Saturday, August 29, please come prepared to share with others a "learning moment" you have experienced as a teacher or a learner, an example of a time when you had a breakthrough that connected learning to life. We will share these moments as a way to explore our own teaching philosophies and get to know each other.
Virtually all participants in recent New Faculty Orientations have said that they felt more deeply connected to Columbia College Chicago after the Saturday program. We look forward to meeting you on Saturday, August 29, 2009; to helping you make your connections to Columbia; and to learning with and from you throughout the year.
Collegially,
—John Dewey
"Who dares to teach must never cease to learn."
