Career Center Resources
Many large research universities (i.e. those with large graduate student populations) have career service centers with information about CVs, job letters, and other aspects of academic job searches. Although most of these sites are geared toward helping recent Ph.D. graduates plan for the academic job market, the advice about CVs is broadly applicable to most academic CVs. Sample CVs from Columbia College Faculty
The following faculty members were kind enough to agree to share their CVs as resources for others. No single CV should be used as a template and there is no single correct form. Each example highlights the unique experiences and accomplishments of the individual faculty member in as clear and readable a way as possible.
Brian Shaw, Theater
This is a comprehensive CV that lists all activities and accomplishments related to Brian’s academic position. Typically, one would not send out such a complete CV for jobs, grants, fellowships, etc., but it’s a good idea to have a comprehensive one from which more tailored CVs can be crafted for specific purposes. Note the categories and sub-categories by which a range of different activities is organized, so that a reader can quickly make sense of Brian’s professional profile.
Brendan Riley, English
To get a sense of how one might “curate” a shorter CV from a more comprehensive one, compare the brief and full versions of a CV on Brendan’s personal website.
Lisa Lenoir, Journalism and AEMM
Lisa wanted to turn her resume into a CV to apply to a master’s program in public administration. As you can see, in her revised CV, she highlights her work in nonprofit administration and organizes her professional experience in a more condensed, readable way (and in reverse chronological order).
Jeff Jacobson, Fiction Writing and Film & Video
Jeff was applying for fiction writing faculty positions in English departments. His CV therefore needed to emphasize his publications and his teaching experience. But he also found a way to include various curriculum development, faculty development, and extra-curricular activities that do not fall directly under publications (scholarship) or courses taught and do not neatly fall under “service.” He also separates out his college-level teaching from his other teaching experiences. Most schools will want to know about college-level teaching, but the other teaching positions round out the picture of him as a candidate.
Jason Halprin, Film & Video
Jason wanted to use his CV to apply for full-time teaching positions in
Film departments, which meant highlighting both his college-level
teaching experience and his expertise and experiences as a filmmaker.
His succinct descriptions of courses taught serve as good examples of
how to show a range of teaching experiences. Including the category
"Areas of Teaching Interests" is also a useful way to show breadth.
Jason also has "Related Employment" to list paid positions that fall
outside his academic work and "Community Service" to list unpaid
activities related to his professional life. The CV has clean,
uncluttered organization and formatting that make it easy to skim and
locate information.

Sample CVs from other schools
Many academics post their CVs on personal or departmental Web sites that are open to the public. Below, you'll find resources at neighboring institutions where faculty CVs can be found, with annotations about what is useful about each. Please note that online CVs often have formatting and features made possible by digital technology that would not translate well into a hard copy format (use of color, e.g.). None of these examples should be taken as definitive models or templates to be copied—in fact, many of them could use some thoughtful revising. Rather, looking at a wide variety of CVs in your field (or related fields) can give you a sense of the main conventions and categories used to organize and present information. So, poke around, and don’t be limited to the Web sites below.

Several faculty have put dates in chronological order, rather than reverse chronological. This makes it difficult to determine quickly what position the person currently holds and what they’ve accomplished most recently, especially when the career is a long and productive one.

What’s useful about it is how projects and publications that fall outside the conventional academic categories (books, peer reviewed journals, etc.) are organized. Skim the categories and sub-categories to get a sense of possible groupings, especially in the “Creative Work" section. One thing that’s missing from the CV is Kleinhans’s education, which appears on the Web site (and on your paper CV, should be in reverse chronological order on the first page). You can also see how the Web site information is organized roughly as it might appear on a CV.
