The Resilience Project

The Resilience Project aims to explore how we as humans deal with trauma, using storytelling and performance as a way of finding universality and strength in the face of adversity.

Structured as a residency, in The Resilience Project, Joe Goode Performance Group works with a marginalized population in the community to create a performance piece based on their real-life experiences. This residency programming consists of interviews and conversations with the selected community members. The communities the company has engaged with thus far have been combat veterans and the elderly. In the Chicago project, the focus will be on combat veterans. Their personal feelings, insights and unique stories of vulnerability and resilience will be woven into a performance piece and shared with the larger community.

Joe Goode is offering the following workshops while in residence at The Dance Center:

Workshop #1 – The Listening Body

Mon, Feb 29, 7-9pm
$10 | Open to Public

The focus of The Listening Body workshop is to facilitate an unpacking of the body, bringing it into a receptive and alert space. The movement sequences allow for gentle exploration of physical ease and a meditative, embodied listening. Our physical expectations are set aside and we are invited into a state of creative and emotional receptivity.
No dance experience necessary. A performance of The Resilience Project will occur at The Dance Center on Saturday, March 5 at 3:30pm. The performance is free of charge. Workshop participants will receive automatic reservations for this performance.

Workshop #2 – Generating The Resilience Project

Tues, Mar 1, 7-9pm
$10 | For the Arts Therapy Community
$15 for both workshops. To purchase, call the Box Office at (312) 369-8330.

Open only to practitioners in the Arts Therapy community, this workshop illuminates and explicates the Resilience Project process. Joe Goode’s choreographic inquiry into how we as humans deal with trauma has led the company to establish partnerships with specific communities as a basis for a creative work. In this workshop we share how we collide movement with the interview material, how the editing process works, and a glimpse of some of the current material we have created.

Life isn’t turning out the way we planned it.
Sometimes it’s much messier than we imagined.
Sometimes it’s a flat line that emits a flat buzzing sound.
Still, we mostly find a way to live it – by making deals with ourselves or with the gods (small g) of love and fortune.
I want to hear from you, my fellow travelers, about where you’ve been so far and the ways in which you have been surprised by it all. The result is what you will see performed.
