Learn a variety of dance techniques, meet other artists from Chicago and explore different perspectives and styles in movement with live accompaniment by Chicago musicians. Moving with momentum, the class will range in styles from release-based work connecting with the floor to an eclectic standing modern class. With emphasis on embodiment, presence and moving with intention, the class will weave together the sensual and ethereal beauty of Persian dance with the passionate and explosive, yet quietly intuitive, power of Banafsheh’s contemporary creations, an interplay between trance and directed movement. The basic Butoh form is the “Suijakutai” (collapsed body). Based on the Suijakutai, students will practice standing up from the lying position while being conscious of every part of the body. David Roussève’s work fuses text, movement, and visual imagery to create a deep dialogue with the viewer. This composition workshop encourages students to explore unique ways of developing vocal and movement material and layering the material together.
