Saudade, by Jorge Vismara
David Roussève/REALITY
Chicago Premiere
March 12, 13 & 14 * 8:00 p.m.
David Roussève/REALITY is a diverse troupe acclaimed for their highly original and expressionistic dance theater, blending elements of dance and performance art with African American traditional and pop cultures. Roussève’s newest eveninglength dance theater work, Saudade, is an ode to the idea of “bittersweet,” the single moment when the greatest joy and agony are experienced together. Saudade mixes world dance forms with stories of disenfranchised southern African-Americans, contemporary Portuguese Fado music and abstract imagery in this deeply personal statement about modern times. With equal parts wild humor and grit, Saudade is performed by Roussève and a distinguished cast of six dancers, including practitioners of South Asian, Indonesian, West African and postmodern dance forms.

David Roussève’s work fuses text, movement, and visual imagery to create a deep dialogue with the viewer. This composition workshop encourages students to explore unique ways of developing vocal and movement material and layering the material together.
