3 Semester Hours The primary goal of this course is to foster an interdisciplinary approach to the study of music. Taking the work of R. Murray Schafer as a principal example, students learn about the elements of music through direct creative efforts (composition), as well as through listening to a wide range of musical examples. The class seeks to build an understanding of the artistic use of sound through culturally and historically diverse examples, to avoid ethnocentric or sexist conditioning. Among the chief concerns are the relationship of music to visual art and other performing arts, and the sociological/cultural conditions in which music exists. Teacher candidates are required to observe music lessons in P-12 classroom settings to extend their understanding about ways to incorporate the use of sound into their teaching.
Course descriptions are stored in OASIS and are maintained by the Associate Dean for each School.
