Tonya Pinkins

'96 Alumnus


“I have to be on stage,” says Tonya Pinkins, who won a Tony for her performance as Sweet Anita in Jelly’s Last Jam. A native Chicagoan, she earned a writing degree from Columbia in 1996 and went on to author a book on how to “claim the life you deserve”—something this Columbia alum definitely knows how to do.

Alana Wallace is the founder of Dance Detour, the first “physically integrated” dance company. She’s a strong example of a Columbia graduate who created a career that suits her passion.
