Advertising, Radio and Broadcast Journalism Students Collaborate for Bilingual Campaign Addressing Domestic Violence

A public awareness campaign, created by Advertising, Radio and Broadcast Journalism students, aired recently on CBS radio stations and earned Columbia a 2017 Community Partner Award from the Center for Advancing Domestic Peace.

The campaign, which features a series of 30- and 60-second radio spots, testimonial videos, and community outreach posters was developed by students in Columbia’s Ad Agency class whose aim is to produce “real projects for real clients.” The client for the project was the Center for Advancing Domestic Peace, the only nonprofit organization in Chicago solely dedicated to rehabilitating those who have abused an intimate partner. Columbia Radio and Broadcast Journalism students produced and voiced the radio spots in English and Spanish.

The campaign educates the community about the problem of intimate partner violence. A soft launch of the radio spots ran on WBBM 96.3FM and 780AM during the holiday season. A full rollout of the public education campaign will get underway this spring with citywide distribution of the outreach posters through local community organizations and businesses as well as additional placement of the radio PSA’s.
