Faculty Toolkit
The Portfolio Center helps students shape their final body of work into a presentation that will help them get good work after graduation. We interact differently with faculty and students from each department. With some, we help students document, record, and package their work samples. With other departments we provide a variety of programs that put students and their work, in front of top-notch professionals to test the waters, get some practice presenting their work, and to begin networking. We have web building and hosting programs for seniors and graduate students in all majors. And in majors where portfolios are not a tradition, we help faculty explore the changing landscape of employer expectations regarding portfolio presentation.
The Portfolio Center works closely with faculty to ensure that our programs are relevant and focused on individual student needs. With the final body of work in mind, we work with students at all levels, in every major/media, in the college.
Class presentations
We welcome you to bring your class to the Portfolio Center for a 45 minute presentation on the Center's programs and services with an emphasis on portfolios in your media. Presentations will help your students be aware of the portfolio expectations in their field.
Contact Mercedes Cooper | mcooper@colum.edu to reserve a date and time for a class presentation. Generally, we need three weeks notice to be able to schedule your request.Portfolio Sessions & Events
“Sessions” take place in the Portfolio Center with junior and senior level classes, their teachers, a Portfolio Center staff member and 2 or 3 industry professionals. A conversation about portfolio and other career issues takes place that can be followed by group portfolio reviews with the professionals looking over work samples with 4 or 5 students at a time. Very friendly. Very helpful. And a good way to ease students into the portfolio development and presentation process.
Events can take the form of industry panel discussions, portfolio reviews, and lectures about portfolio issues and are open to all students.
If you‘re interested in having a portfolio session or event, let’s talk. We have great contacts and the wherewithal to produce an excellent experience for your students.
Contact one of our Creative Industry Liaisons to inquire about co-sponsoring a portfolio-themed event.

Assessment tools
In conjunction with Photography, Art & Design (for Advertising Art majors) and Interactive Arts & Media, we developed an online portfolio assessment survey to be completed by professionals guests of the Portfolio Center.
Contact Mercedes Cooper | mcooper@colum.edu if you would like to construct a survey tool specific to your students' intended profession.
What else?
You tell us. We're always looking for new ways to collaborate.
