Music for Children

Ages  6 to 13

Sherwood offers opportunities for students to learn and enhance individual skills while experiencing the joy of making music with others. Our range of group classes covers many instruments and styles, and offers something for everyone!

Group Piano Classes

Group piano is an ideal way to try out the piano and build the foundation for continued individual study in piano or other instruments. Students will learn orientation to the keyboard, beginning music-reading skills, and simple melodies in an age appropriate manner. Group piano classes are taught in Sherwood’s state-of-the-art keyboard lab. Enrollment is limited to eight students per class. For the 6-8 year old classes, parent/caregivers are required to be in proximity of the classroom during class time. Enrollment in 'Encore' classes requires prior enrollment in an Introductory class or teacher approval. There are four different sections of group piano classes:

Introductory Piano (ages 6-8)
Introductory Piano (ages 9-12)
Encore Piano (ages 6-8)
Encore Piano (ages 9-12)

 

Introductory Guitar

Interested in playing for family and friends or becoming the next rock star? Group guitar class is a great way to get introduced or reacquainted with the instrument that everyone loves. Learn chords, strumming patterns, and melodic lines as well as how to play with others in a fun, relaxed setting. Enrollment is limited to eight students per class. For the 6-8 year old classes, parent/caregivers are required to be in proximity of the classroom during class time. Enrollment in 'Encore' classes requires prior enrollment in an Introductory class or teacher approval. There are four different sections of group guitar classes:

Introductory Harp  

Sherwood is the only community music school in Chicago offering instruction on harp. Introductory harp is a great way for young students to become familiar with the harp in a fun and social environment.

 

Guitar Hero
ages 9 to 13

This class is inspired by the video game “Guitar Hero,” in which gamers play a virtual guitar joystick in time with a classic rock soundtrack. Students will learn to play songs from the “Guitar Hero” and “Rockband” video games, on a real guitar, featuring rock songs from the 60's to the present day. Students will also learn techniques used to play electric guitar and work on improving their rhythmic skills. 

 

New!Chicago Harp Ensemble
(ages 5 - 18)

The Chicago Harp Ensemble provides vital ensemble training to harpists of all ages, skill level, and harp type striving to improve their overall rhythm, musicianship and listening skills. An enriching opportunity for all harp students, participation in an ensemble will help build and foster a supportive community of harpists. Marguerite Lynn Williams, Director of the Chicago Harp Ensemble and Janelle Lake, Assistant Director. An audition is required for new members. There are three levels of ensemble, Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced.

Our new Sherwood Family Chorus is a great family activity that everyone can do together - mom, dad, and kids! Enjoy singing together with other neighborhood families in a relaxed social setting while learning new music and improving your voal chops!
