Kids Classes

Sherwood cultivates your child's potential through fun and accessible classes in music, dance and theatre. Our kids programs are open to anyone who wishes to participate, and are taught in a playful and informal learning environment.

Vision Quest, an Original Musical

Ages 6 - 8

This original musical play, written especially for children ages 6, 7 and 8, is based upon three different Native American legends. The story involves a child who ventures into the forest at night, and encounters various creatures and people, both fierce and friendly, and learns valuable life lessons along the way. There are no auditions required to participate, although enrollment is strictly limited to 12 children. The class culminates in a final performance that is free and open to the public.

New! Rainbow Recorders

Ages 6-8

This class is the perfect opportunity for children to learn notes and how to play an instrument with others! The recorder helps build the foundation for studying wind instruments with ease. Plus, kids can pick their favorite color recorder, which will be waiting for them on the first day of class. Students will participate in a performance at the end of the term to show friends and family what they have learned.

New! Uku-la-la

Ages 6-8

The ukulele is a fun, accessible instrument for little hands looking to start strumming! No experience is necessary to participate, and your child can pick her/his favorite color ukulele before class. Kids will have fun learning to play and sing folk songs through social, game-based activities. At the end of the term, children will have an opportunity to perform for friends and family.

Kids Piano Lab

Ages 6-8

Kids Piano Lab is an ideal way to try out the piano in a group setting and build the foundation for continued individual study in piano or other instruments. Students will acquire a familiarity with the keyboard, learn beginning music reading skills, and play simple melodies. Classes are taught in Sherwood’s digital keyboard lab. There are three levels of Kids Piano Lab meant to be taken sequentially.

Kids Piano Lab - Level 1 (ages 6-8): 
Introductory students will learn basic concepts and techniques on the instrument including music reading skills and simple one hand melodies

Kids Piano Lab - Level 2 (ages 6-8): 
Level 2 participants will begin working on two hand pieces as well as further developing music theory and technical skills.

Kids Piano Lab - Level 3 (ages 6-8): 
Level 3 participants will expand on the skills from Level 2.

Kids Piano Lab - Level 2 (ages 9-12): 
Level 2 participants will progress to learning 3-note chord voicings and extend their range on the instrument.

Kids Piano Lab - Level 3 (ages 9-12): 
Level 3 participants will expand on the skills from Level 2

Legend of the Red Sky, An Original Musical

Ages 9-12

Why does the sky turn red at night? Why do hurricanes rage in the sea? A mother and her daughter are visited by a young child who holds the key to these questions, and more. But can they offer protection from the sea goddess Minerva, who wants to keep the child for her very own? This original musical teaches acting, singing and movement in an ensemble environment, and culminates in a final performance that is open to the public.

Kids Guitar

Ages 6-8

Are you interested in playing for family and friends or becoming the next rock star? Kids Guitar class is a great way to get introduced to the guitar! Learn chords, strumming patterns, and melodic lines as well as how to play with others in a fun, relaxed setting. There are two levels of Kids Guitar meant to be taken sequentially: Kids Guitar 1 and Kids Guitar 2.

Kids Guitar 1 (ages 6-8): 
Kids Guitar 1 participants will learn basic concepts and techniques on the instrument including how to read and play melodies and chords on the first three strings. 

Kids Guitar 2 (ages 6-8): 
Kids Guitar 2 students will learn all notes in the first position as well as how to play at least one solo piece.

A guitar is required for all guitar classes. Sherwood does not rent guitars, however, your instructor can help recommend one for you.

Voice for the Young Performer

Ages 6-12

By singing with a group, students will learn how to develop their stage presence and be introduced to vocal technique through a variety of popular songs. Through interactive games, students will learn basic rhythm and pitch. At the end of the term, children have the opportunity to participate at an end-of-session performance for friends and family.

There are two sections of ‘Voice for the Young Performer’ for children, one for ages 6 – 8, and one for ages 9 – 12.
