Sherwood's Teen classes help serious-minded students learn and enhance individual skills that may help them gain acceptance into major universities and conservatories across the country. These classes cater to a wide range of skill levels in classical and jazz mediums, and are taught in a supportive, social group environment.

Participation in a Chamber Ensemble provides students the opportunity to collaborate and perform with other like-minded young musicians in small groups. Mixed-instrument trios, quartets and quintets will be formed based on age, level and instrumentation. Repertoire from Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras will be covered. The class will conclude with a performance at the end of term Student Showcase Recital.
Classical Repertoire class offers students the opportunity to explore the full range of their instrument's major works with their peers. Multimedia presentations followed by in-depth discussion and research help students develop a deeper understanding together of their instrument's repertoire. Students will have opportunities to give presentations and share ideas and music of their own.
This course will cover the basics of jazz history, theory, repertoire, and improvisation. A performance-based class, students will work together to develop knowledge of the jazz tradition through learning, listening, playing, and discussing essential jazz repertoire in a hands-on, collaborative environment.
Jazz Combo is an excellent opportunity for students to meet and perform with other young musicians interested in jazz and improvisational music. Students will learn traditional jazz styles and phrasing, as well as improvisation techniques. Repertoire will include Swing, Blues, Funk, Latin Jazz, among others. The class will conclude with a performance at the end of term Student Showcase Recital.
Sherwood's Musicianship classes focus on the study of music theory, ear training, sight-singing, and analysis. Based on the Royal Conservatory of Music Achievement Program, these classes will provide students with a strong foundation with which to begin their college career. There are three levels of Musicianship classes, and students are expected to place themselves in the appropriate level. Please refer to the document below for placement guidelines.
