2014 Scholarship Competition

Sherwood’s annual Scholarship Competition is an opportunity for new and current students to participate in a rewarding performance experience. Students will have the opportunity to perform for a panel of judges and compete for a scholarship award for private instruction in the 2014-2015 school year.

How To Register
Pay the $15 application fee. Payment may be made online through our secure Online Registration Center (select the activity listed as 'Scholarship Competition Fee'), by phone at (312) 369-3100, or in person at Sherwood during regular business hours.

Who is Eligible?
Sherwood’s Scholarship Competition is open to all instrumental students up to grade 11 in the following divisions:

Auditions will be held in the late afternoon and early evenings on the dates listed at the top of this page. An audition time will be assigned no later than two weeks before the audition date and communicated via email. Audition times are final and cannot be changed for any reason. Audition slots will be limited to five minutes for the Elementary division, seven minutes for the Junior division, and ten minutes for the Senior division. Those competing in the Senior division are required to perform two contrasting pieces. (This is optional for those in the Junior division.) Please note that voice students may only compete in the Senior Division.

There are no repertoire guidelines, however students are required to provide two (2) copies of her/his repertoire for the judges. Please bring copies with you, Sherwood will not make copes for you. Repertoire memorization is suggested, but not required. Preliminary performances are open to the public.

Please note that we no longer accept entries for composition.

Honors Recital
A total of six winners will be chosen, two from each division. All winners are required to participate in the Honors Recital on Thursday, May 22, 2014, and family and friends are welcome to attend. First and second place winners in each division will be determined by a panel of judges at the Honor's Recital and will be announced at the end of the evening. In addition, there will be an ‘Audience Prize’ that the audience selects via voting the night of the concert. The winner of the Audience Prize will receive an Apple ipad.

Students are required to secure their own accompanist if needed, Sherwood will not provide an accompanist for you. All scheduling of rehearsals, communication, and payment for accompanists must be handled directly between the participant and the accompanist, not through Sherwood. If you need to find an accompanist, we will provide you with a list of suggested accompanists.

Sherwood Scholarship Information
Two finalists will be chosen from each division: Elementary, Junior, and Senior. Awards will be issued as tuition reductions during the 2014-2015 academic year, not as direct cash awards; please see below for specific award information. All awards will be made at the discretion of judges, and must be used for individual lesson instruction at Sherwood Community Music School.


Notification of Competition Results
Results of the six division finalists will be posted on Sherwood's website by the end of the day, Friday, May 9. Phone calls or emails will not be sent to individual participants with award notifications, participants are expected to check the website for results. First and second place winners will be announced at the conclusion of the Honors Recital on Thursday, May 22 at 7:00 pm.
