The joy of music making; understanding of the learning process and self discovery through discipline and commitment.
Are there specific methods or techniques that you use in your teaching that may be important to share with prospective students?
I stress technique and theory as indispensable parts of musicianship. I teach concepts through humor.
What do you enjoy most about teaching?
Sharing a sense of musical discovery with students.
What are some of your greatest musical memories?
My earliest experience was watching my sister's piano lessons. The other part is hard - there is not just one best memory. The best ones are when I feel a sense of "flow," or I'm "in the zone," a deep deep concentration and absorbance in the moment.
Please describe one of your favorite teachers or mentors.
My college teacher, Arbo Waldma. He is a passionate and hard-working musician and a very creative pedagogue.
What is your favorite type of music?
Usually the current 'project'. I really enjoy listening to Baroque music and enjoy performing Romantic and current Art Music. Favorite pianists include Edwin Fischer, Alfred Brendel and Radu Lupu.
