Connections Schedule

Connections are programs sponsored by the individual academic departments. These MANDATORY events are your chance to meet members of your faculty and get connected with other students in your field of study.  So the first thing you should do is find your department’s Connections session below, and mark it on your calendar. After doing so, plan the rest of the Weeks of Welcome sessions you want to attend, around it.   Remember, YOU ARE REQUIRED TO GO TO YOUR DEPARTMENT CONNECTIONS PROGRAM.

School of Fine & Performing Arts Connections Schedule

Art & Design

Musical Theater Students: Bring dance attire, shoes and a song
Design/Technical Students: Bring evidence of work
Acting Students: Dress comfortably to move freely
Playwright Students: Bring a writing sample that can be left with faculty.

DESCRIPTION: This Connections session is a mandatory session for all new Journalism students. This session is your chance to connect with fellow students and faculty in the Journalism Department.  Getting to know your peers and members of the faculty is a great way to begin a successful college experience. 

Marketing Communication
CONNECTIONS DATE: Tuesday, August, 26th

CONNECTIONS LOCATION: Collins Hall, 624 S. Michigan, 602
DESCRIPTION: This Connections session is a mandatory session for all new Marketing students. Faculty and some current students will give new students a brief introduction to the Marketing Communication Department.  Following that introduction, the new students will go into small-group breakout sessions to learn more about each concentration (i.e. marketing, sports marketing, advertising, public relations). Also, focus will be given to career overviews, professional clubs and other extracurricular activities.

Radio
CONNECTIONS DATE: Wednesday, August, 27th
CONNECTIONS TIME: 11:30am - 2:00pm
CONNECTIONS LOCATION: 33 East Congress, 705 DESCRIPTION: This Connections session will be your chance to connect with fellow students and faculty in the Radio Department.  Getting to know your peers and members of the faculty is a great way to begin a successful college experience.  The Radio Department has a full two hours of programming planned that will surely make your transition to Columbia College, specifically the Radio Department, much easier.  For more information, go to www.colum.edu/undergraduate/radio.

Television

CONNECTIONS LOCATION: 600 S. Michigan, 921 DESCRIPTION: This Connections session will be your chance to connect with fellow students and faculty in the Television Department.  Getting to know your peers and members of the faculty is a great way to begin a successful college experience.  The Television Department has a full two hours of programming planned that will surely make your transition to Columbia College and specifically the Television Department much better.  For more information, go to www.columbiacollege.tv.

ASL-English Interpretation
CONNECTIONS DATE: Wednesday, August 27th

CONNECTIONS LOCATION: To Be Determined
DESCRIPTION: This Connections session is a mandatory session for all new ASL students. Welcome to Columbia College’s ASL-English Interpretation Department!  Come meet our dynamic faculty and staff, make connections to other new students, and see examples of upper level students’ work.  This fun lunch will be an informal way for you to get to know the department, and to start to feel part of the ASL-English Interpretation family.

Cultural Studies
CONNECTIONS DATE: Tuesday, August 26th
CONNECTIONS TIME: 1:00pm - 3:00pm
CONNECTIONS LOCATION: 623 S. Wabash, Room 1301
DESCRIPTION: This Connections session is a mandatory session. During the Connections session for Cultural Studies, students will gather information about scholarships, departmental and school wide. Students will also be introduced to International exchange program opportunities available to C.S. majors, such as the University of East London semester exchange and J-term in Shanghi. New and returning faculty members will be available to meet and greet students throughout the session, faculty members will also share in a presentation about the Cultural Studies major and the three minors, Black World Studies, Latino Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies.

Early Childhood Education

DESCRIPTION: This Connections session is a mandatory session. All new students must choose from one of the two sessions listed above.   This session is your chance to connect with fellow students and faculty in the Early Childhood Education Department.  Getting to know your peers and members of the faculty is a great way to begin a successful college experience. Discover your artistic pathway. Explore your journey from your first brushstrokes, dance steps, or preschool performance.

Poetry

DESCRIPTION This Connections session is a mandatory session. This session is your chance to connect with fellow students and faculty in the Poetry Department.  Getting to know your peers and members of the faculty is a great way to begin a successful college experience. Meet your Poetry faculty!  Listen to a selection of their poems!  Learn secrets about the Poetry Program that they can’t tell you at Orientation!
