Bad Girls Behind Bars
Sharon Zurek, US, 2005
8:30 pm

Sharpen up your shank and get ready to cool your heels in the Big House. Bad Girls Behind Bars takes a campy look at women-in-prison films, blending audience participation with segments of four classics of the genre recut to highlight their Sapphic content. Barbara Stanwyck, Pam Grier, Anne Heche, and Ione Skye star as the cellmates you wouldn't mind having. You'll beat feet with your bull dagger bunkie by the end of this wacky prison send-up. Video, 90 min.

http://www.reelingfilmfestival.org/film_badgirlsbehindbars.html

Okay Chicago --- BAD GIRLS BEHIND BARS is back and playing to our hometown crowd. They are shouting out in New York (very verbal group), Austin (didn't see 'em), Washington DC (10/20 - I'll let you know) and Indianapolis (we have audience spies).

ARE YOU TOUGH ENOUGH TO TAKE A TRIP TO THE BIG HOUSE?

VISITOR BADGES WILL BE PROVIDED!

PS - It's safer to come in a REALLY BIG GROUP! If you can't find a REALLY BIG GROUP then come a little early and slide into line and pretend you know everyone!!

Also, Sam Patterson's Directing III film "Short Trip Home" will screen on Saturday, November 12 at 5 p.m. in Room 302 of 1104 S. Wabash.

The Kansas City Filmmakers Jubilee will be celebrating its 10th Anniversary in April 2006.

Film, video and media makers are invited to submit your short film or video (under 30 minutes).
The next deadline is November 1. The final deadline is December 1, 2005

Send us your comedies, dramas, animations, documentaries and experimental works.

A new category for this year is work inspired by JAZZ. Kansas City has a rich jazz heritage and it has always been a part of our festival. You can add to that heritage by creating and entering work - dramas, comedies, music videos, documentaries or experimental works - inspired by jazz -make them cool or hot, improvisational. The best films will become part of the permanent collection of the American Jazz Museum and the Mutual Musicians Foundation in Kansas City, Missouri.

For forms and guidelines visit our website - www.kcjubilee org or go to www.withoutabox.com.
To make our celebration extra special, the co-chairs of our Jury this year are producers Julie Corman and Sam Grogg. Julie continues to produce films with her husband Roger Corman. Sam has just taken over the helm of the University of Miami Film School. Esther Robinson of the Creative Capital Foundation will be returning as a juror.
Other confirmed festival guests are John Sloss and John & Janet Pierson.

what: an art show of aphorisms!

running Saturdays and Sundays from noon-6 p.m.

GOD BLESS THE “ME”-“S”-“A”
t-shirts for a country told that it will feel better
if it just keeps buying more stuff

by Dan Rybicky

A new gallery will be opening a show featuring fifty red, white and blue t-shirts all printed with text exploring the dichotomies of a dysfunctional country in denial, divided between rich and poor and torn between shopping and killing.

Inspired by the classic t-shirts of the past spouting slogans like “My brother went to Iraq and all I got was this damned body bag,” this show will examine with dark humor and bright colors the gulf between what one hopes for and what one actually ends up with – and how it relates to American’s addiction to conspicuously consuming.

The gallery space will resemble a sleek retail store with t-shirts descending en masse from the ceiling.

The opening night will feature live performances of real people made up to look like dead, bloodied soldiers singing patriotic songs from the balcony. Iraqi-shaped cakes (with “Have your cake and eat it, too” written on them) will be served.

The closing night will feature a special live performance from beat-boxer Yuri Lane.

“I’ve always been interested in how t-shirts can deliver subversive slogans and aphorisms.”

For more information, please contact me. And, by all means, please come!
