| About the Producing Concentration The
goal of the producing concentration is to provide film and video makers
with the skills to take three paths of action: to sell film and video
ideas to producing entities within the existing professional
film production and financing system ("the Studios") or to manage the
production the production of films and videos including but not limited
to features, documentaries, music videos and corporate videos and commercials;
and finally to sell films to a producer/distributor ("Independents").
Specifically, the courses in this concentration teach filmmakers how
to merge the creative and business skills necessary to find material,
conduct research, network, write, build creative teams, interact with
creative and technical personnel, negotiate, finance and distribute
creative products in ways appropriate to the content and approach of
each project. |

| Producers are self-motivated. Producing students should decide early in their academic careers to pursue projects to produce through a variety of practicum courses. Your ability to make genuine contacts begins the day you walk in the door. You should always be on the look out for people with whom you wish to collaborate. You can't learn how to produce without doing it. For those students interested in studio producing, we have created the Semester in Los Angeles program. We strongly encourage producing students to explore a wide range of topics and modes of expression. To that end, the required classes for the concentration have been kept to a minimum while the electives for the concentration represent a broad array of choices. We believe your film career begins in film school. We also believe that a good producer posseses a wide variety of skills and interests. |

| What
is a producer? A producer is the person who makes a project happen. She is a good judge of talent and character. She is an organized multitasker. Disciplined and focused, the producer is as comfortable with a script as she is with a budget. She is mature, tough and compassionate; a coach, a confessor, a confidant. She recognizes differences and smoothes over disputes. She knows when to say yes and when to say no. She loves to schmooze and understands the art of the deal. Ultimately, she is responsible for what appears on the screen. |
