Advanced Production at Columbia can be accomplished through two methods -- classes whose goals and content are about production (listed below) and independent projects in which a student individually or in collaboration undertakes a faculty supervised production for academic credit.
24-2910 Production III (4cr)
Students
make several short videotapes using digital cameras and digital editing
software. Theme-oriented projects emphasize documentary and alternative
forms – such as diary, music, video and
experimental narrative. (Completion
of the Core)
24-3000 Advanced Production Seminar
(3cr)
Students
collaborate on a short project or create a reel. Students enroll as Producers,
Directors, DPs, Editors, Sound People, Artand Art Directors. The
class insures clear communication about equipment and space availability,
postproduction options, production fund applications and collaborations
with other departments. Finally,
the class looks to the next step beyond graduation -- students cut reels
with cue sheets, polish resumes, write personal statements and create press
kits. (Completion
of Core) For enrollment procedure, please see Ted Hardin (900B, 344-7354,
thardin@popmail.com)
24-3203 Special Studies in Cinematography II (4 cr)
Course
acquaints students with the role of the cinematographer in motion pictures.
Content focuses on: creation of the movie's visual concept, problems of
style, and design and arrangement in connection with choice of creative
techniques. Course also deals with color structure of the motion picture. (24-3202
Special Studies in Cinematography I, 24-3206 Photo Theory/Laboratory Practice,
24-3201 Cinematography: Camera Seminar II (may be taken concurrently), and permission of instructor)
24-3303 Directing III (6cr)
Students
direct their own dramatic material, from preparation of a script breakdown
to final cut. Using digital video, students collaborate with a cinematographer,
sound engineer and editor.. Students apply for admittance by submitting
a very short, dramatically effective screenplay that is ready for pre-production.
(24-3302 Directing II, permission
of instructor and Directing Coordinator)
24-3310 Directing for the Camera
(4cr)
Students
collectively create a narrative video. Using acting exercises, creative
writing techniques and elements of performance theory, students work as
actors, improvising a dramatic text. The piece is then videotapes and edited
using only the class as crew and postproduction personnel. Final project
is a 10 minute video. Students must present an audition piece for acceptance
into the class. (24-2202 Camera Seminar I and one of the following: 24-1300
Acting Techniques for filmmakers, 24-2301, Directing I or 31-1200 Acting:
Basic Skills)
24-3801 Documentary Production (3cr)
In addition
to weekly exercises, students make a short documentary. Students learn a
systematic process including Development and Preproduction, research, treatment, shooting
and editing. (24-2801 Documentary
Vision)
24-3805 Creating the Personal Documentary (3cr)
This course
trains students to articulate their personal perspectives on themselves
and the subjects that are important in their lives. Each student will develop
and structure a short, personal documentary. (Production
III or Documentary Vision)
24-3915 Experimental Video and Digital
Production (3cr)
Students
produce 3 short pieces and a final project,
shooting and editing digitally. Through readings, screenings, discussion, and class critiques,
this course will inform the development of an aesthetic that explores, challenges,
or subverts conventional narrative or documentary structures. (Completion of Core and Production III)
24-4631
Producing Practicum (4cr)
Students
will learn the ins and outs of the studio system as it is currently structured and practiced. Topics include scheduling budgeting, and line-producing
in the context of large budgets and complex projects. Additional components include development,
reading for coverage, complex financing, and distribution structure. This class also explores the various roles
of executives in the film industry.
24-4811
Representation and Activism (3cr)
Students
will work on individual and collaborative
projects in order to (re)present, engage and inspire through the creation
of video art that explores alternative representations of selected current
issues . The role of history and memory, race, gender, class and sexuality
are foregrounded. (Production III or Documentary Production)
24-4852 Documentary III (3cr)
Course
consists of advanced workshops in documentary camera, sound, and editing; researching and writing a treatment for a documentary
film; producing and editing a documentary
film; readings, screenings and discussions
of documentary films. (Documentary Production)
24-4900 Music Video Production (3cr)
This course
analyzes artistic methods of combining visual imagery with music. While MTV-style music videos are included,
the course is not limited to that approach. Through group projects, students
learn various production techniques, including scripting, budgeting, and
lip sync recording. Students develop a final
music video project from script to final edit with a local band. (Completion
of Core/Production III)
24-4910 Multimedia Techniques: Digital Production for
the Internet (4cr)
Students
combine existing skills and develop new ones in digital video production,
computer animation, image manipulation and digital editing. In this project-oriented
class students learn to synthesize several media elements on a computer to
produce an original work for display on the Internet..
(Completion of the Core and Production
III with B or better)
24- 4920 Production IV (4cr)
Students
make a short videotape in any genre or form they choose -- shooting with
digital cameras and learning to edit with the Avid Media Express. (Completion of Core and Production III)
In order
to do an independent project, you must get an Independent
Project Form from the Production Manager Emily Reible (344-6663, Room
501C) Independent Projects in Cinematography, Screenwriting and Post Production (including audio and documentary have their
own forms and procedures – see appropriate coordinator for information on
these.)
24-3198 Production Audio
Under the supervision of
a faculty member, student must be the Sound Mixer for a project shooting
during the semester. Student must
fill out a work order as part of the Independent Project Application (available
in Sound Studio). In addition, independent sound projects must get the signature
of the Sound Coordinator rather than Advanced Production Coordinator.
24-4653 Development and
Preproduction
Under
the supervision of a faculty member, students develop and pre-produce a
project suitable for production during the following semester. The goal of the class is to have a finished
production package, appropriate for production of the film or video. The package will include a script, script synopsis,
character list and description, budget and artistic vision statements for
cinematography, sound, production design, wardrobe, and makeup.
24-3898 Documentary Production

student finishes both the pre-production and production phases of a short documentary
within one or two semesters. To be enrolled in the class, students must approach the supervisor
with a proposal, outline or early draft of a script and a timetable.
Registration requires supervisor's approval.
Once in the class,
filmmakers proceed through research, budgeting, scheduling, casting and
ultimately shooting their film. A
separate
independent
project credit is required for post-production. A documentary project requires the
signature of the Documentary Center Technical Coordinator and the Director
of the Documentary Center.

finishes both the pre-production and production phases of a short fiction or experimental film within
two semesters. To be enrolled in
the class, students must approach the supervisor with a treatment, outline
or early draft of a script. Registration
requires supervisor’s approval. Once
in the class,. filmmakers proceed through re-writes, budgeting,
