Brightcove - Video embedding

Embed short video in web pages using Brightcove

What is Brightcove?
Brightcove is an off-site video conversion and hosting service. Columbia web developers can upload a Quicktime or AVI movie to the Brightcove servers, where the file will be converted to Flash (FLV) format. After adding some HTML code to a Collage page the video can be viewed in a web browser; the video is streamed from the Brightcove servers, which provides fast delivery.

Who can use Brightcove?
Any department with short video  (generally 2-3 minutes max.) can have an account; please contact the Webmaster for details. As of Spring 2008, the service is covered through the Web Services budget.

When is Brightcove an appropriate solution?
Short form is best, due to the nature of Flash video via the web. Longer video (or video-casts, or podcasts) will be better served by the iTunesU system, which is co-ordinated by the Center for Instructional Technology staff.

FAQ

I uploaded a video but it hasn't shown up yet. Why? Columbia College Chicago gets lot of video submissions. It might take up to a few days to see your video show up on our site. It will also help if the content that you submit is appropriate for display on Columbia's public web site.

What file formats can be uploaded?

  • .3GP
  • .AVI
  • .DV
  • h.264
  • .MPEG2
  • .MPEG4
  • Quicktime
  • .WMV

What is the maximum file size or video length that can be uploaded? The maximum file size for upload is 100 MB, which for many of the formats above is usually two to three minutes in length. We recommend that you limit the length of the video to two minutes.

My video is live but how can I improve the quality? Brightcove uses best-of-breed technology to convert your video into Flash video, a popular format that works well on the Web and across the Brightcove service. Try to start with high-quality video that is bright or well lit, and has not already been compressed heavily for use on a low quality platform such as a mobile phone.
