Katie A. Paciga, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Education at Columbia College Chicago in the Humanities, History, and Social Sciences Department. She served as the first ever Early Career Research Fellow of the Technology in Early Childhood TEC Center and the Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning and Media from 2015-2017.
She holds a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus in Literacy, Language, and Culture (University of Illinois at Chicago, 2011) and is a licensed elementary school educator as well, having earned a BS in Elementary Education and a BA in Spanish from Loyola University Chicago in 2002. Katie began her career as an educator with five years of primary level teaching experiences in schools serving a low income and English language learning population. She earned an MS, Ed. in Instructional Leadership with a concentration in Literacy, Language & Culture from University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) in 2006 during those years teaching in the primary grades. Katie connects those primary grade level experiences to her college-level teaching, professional development for inservice educators, and to her scholarship. Currently, her teaching and research interests focus on the social, emotional, cultural, and cognitive bases for language and literacy development, with a focus on the ways in which educational policies, human interaction, individual interests, printed media (i.e., children's literature) and interactive media (i.e., web- and app-based games and tools) contribute to language and literacy teaching and learning. Her scholarship has been published in several peer-reviewed journals and much of it is indexed on Academia.edu and ResearchGate.net. She currently serves the Association for Library Services to Young Children as the chair of the Excellence in Early Learning Digital Media award selection committee.
