Biography

Adjunct Professor, Interior Architecture Teaching areas include: Interdisciplinary Design (Manifesting marketing and brand strategy into the built environment integrating all disciplines of design), Branded Environments, Corporate Interiors, Showroom and Retail Design, Portfolio for Interiors, Business of DesignPresident l Founder, marquardt+ Formed in 1988 as Marquardt Design Collaboratives, incorporated in 2000 as Design Collaboratives, Inc. and rebranded as marquardt+ in 2011. m+ is an interactive client/market responsive strategy and design studio practice specializing in the interdisciplinary design process to develop and execute project solutions. We have provided over three decades of expertise in corporate, commercial, retail, educational, institutional, nonprofit, residential settings. m+ offers a comprehensive list of strategy and subsequesnt design services and are design leaders known for "branded environments" as a process, not a project type. We engage all aspects of client driven design regardless of discipline or project challenge. President, Society of British and International Design (SBID)

Tom has won many design awards, and was recognized for his contributions to the design industry in 2017 receiving the IIDA Leadership Honoree of Excellence Award, and was the recipent of the 2014 Interior Design Magazine Interior Designer of the Year for his Branded Environments work. Tom and m+ has been featured in publications including Interior Design Magazine, Interiors & Sources, Contract, Objekt International, Architectural Digest, eSociety and Abitare.

Instructional Areas

Branded Environments - Integrating interiors, graphics, communications design and marketing and brand strategy and students in one studio course and active learning project. I have taught this studio with with just Interior designers, and at other educational institutions with combinations of all the other degree disciplines in one studio. Corporate Interiors Portfolio for Interior Design Business of Design Textiles for Design Surface Manipulation Co-Teaching Marketing and Brand Strategy as a bridger person to the physical manifestations and deliverables of such work.

Creative Practice and Research Interests

Interdisciplinary Design and the reduction of silos between Design professions and disciplines, including Interior Design, Graphic and Communication Design, Architecture, Marketing and Brand Strategies, in both education and practice. The Design Process and the marketing of design as a service. The integration of design as an industry, across all aspects of borders and silo limitations.
