Columbia’s Music Department's two buildings house more than 50 spaces for rehearsing, composing, recording, and performing.
From rehearsal space to two full concert halls and dedicated Digital Music Labs, you’ll have the space and tools you need to make your music. Our department has a distinctive focus on contemporary, Jazz, and popular music, so we’ve designed all our spaces to prepare you for professional live music venues and recording studios.
Whether you need space for a duo or a 20-piece band, we have you covered. Every Ensemble Room is equipped with the tools you’ll need to write, rehearse, and record. This includes PA systems, amps, mics, keyboards, projectors, and a digital board that interfaces with a computer running Logic and more, or bring your own computer.
Practice Rooms are available in both buildings and may be reserved for a time that’s convenient for you. The rooms at 1014 S. Michigan have been acoustically treated. There we also have four soundproof Wenger sound booths. The rooms at 1312 S. Michigan have a mix of Kawai, Yamaha, and Steinway grand pianos.

Our two 140-seat fully equipped performance spaces host more than 100 concerts every year. Our stages are also open for students to reserve for special events. Internships are available if you’re interested in being part of the sound and stage management crew.
Digital Music Labs at 1014 S. Michigan Ave.
At 1014 S. Michigan you’ll have access to a state-of-the-art digital music production lab that is also a centralized space to learn about writing, editing, and performing music in a digital workspace. You’ll have access to industry-standard software and hardware to create your own EP, from mixing and mastering to virtual instruments to audio recording and processing. The lab is also fully equipped with 9.1 surround sound for amazing sound clarity and endless mixing creativity. In addition, we have two smaller digital music/mixing rooms where you can create, mix, and perfect your own projects.
The Keyboard Labs at 1312 S. Michigan Ave.
At 1312 S. Michigan you’ll have access to two state-of-the-art keyboard labs where — in between classes — you can work on your skills, or hook up your computer to do your own digital production work.
The Percussion Studio at 1312 S. Michigan Ave.
If you’re studying percussion, at 1312 S. Michigan you’ll have access to a state-of-the-art percussion studio which where you’ll have access to a full set of percussion instruments including drum sets, all types of mallets, timpani and much, much more.
Equipment Checkout at 1014 S. Michigan Ave.
You’ll have access to a professional collection of equipment that you can sign out for use in your creative and artistic pursuits—both on and off campus. Need a PA system? Check. How about a sound board? Check. Keyboards? Drum sets? Monitors? Yes, we’ve got those too.
