Columbia College Chicago

Multimedia Journalism - Magazine, BA

The award-winning Echo magazine, produced by Columbia students, offers invaluable experience in magazine writing, editing, layout, design and publishing, both for print and for the magazine’s companion website. Most important, you’ll collaborate with students from throughout the college—writers, graphic designers and art directors—in a way that mirrors industry magazine production.

In addition to Echo, you’ll have opportunities for internships at many of the magazines and business publications in Chicago. At Columbia, we champion the importance of the core values of journalism while also equipping you with crucial multimedia skills. You can take elective courses in storytelling for mobile, social media, video, audio and web design, and you can explore a passion for specialties such as travel or fashion writing. You’ll graduate with a robust portfolio and the ability to shape a journalism career that meets your wants and needs.

What to Expect Your First Year

You’ll take Introduction to Journalism, which is part of the foundational course requirements for the Multimedia Journalism major. This intro course is not, however, your traditional survey class. In your first few weeks, you’ll venture out into the city, finding and developing stories with close guidance from your professors. There are even opportunities to have your stories published so you can start building a body of work. This practical application will help you hone your reporting skills and support your study of theory, practice and historical perspectives.

What to Expect Your Last Year

As a senior, you’ll curate your body of work and refine your portfolio. You’ll take electives such as Fashion Journalism and Launching a Journalism Startup, or enroll in the Echo magazine practicum to strengthen your collaborative skills working with Design and Photography majors.

By your last year, you’ll likely be working on your second internship, bringing with you a practical knowledge of industry standards, technology and practices. By the time you graduate, you’ll have a portfolio that reflects your experience working for consumer and business magazines in a major media market.

Real-world Opportunities

What experience will I get outside the classroom?

Columbia prides itself on giving you real-world opportunities. As a Journalism student, you’ll have the chance to cover exciting issues across Chicago in spheres such as politics, culture, entertainment and sports. The city will be your laboratory as you learn and report alongside professional journalists.

You’ll have the chance to work for award-winning, student-run media outlets like the Columbia Chronicle newspaper, Echo magazine, ChicagoTalks and AustinTalks online publications, 88.1 WCRX-FM (our radio station) and Frequency TV (our TV station).

You can also take advantage of study abroad opportunities. Past locations have included Ireland and Italy.

What are my internship options?

You’ll have access to an array of internship opportunities at companies ranging from globally known media outlets to startups, both locally and nationally. Our students have landed assignments at the Chicago Reader, Time Out magazine, Chicago Sun-Times, Dow Jones, U.S. News & World Report, O magazine, Crain’s Chicago Business, Ad Age magazine, Modern Luxury, banks and nonprofit organizations.

Our full-time internship coordinator can help you find opportunities, professional environments and internship learning experiences that best complement your coursework. Though internships are not required, we encourage you to find multiple internship experiences beginning your junior year.
