March 20, 2020
Dear SiLA students,
As the COVID-19 crisis grows in severity in California, combined with the Governor's order issued last evening, Columbia College Chicago has made the decision to close the residence halls for our Semester in Los Angeles (SiLA) program during this time of national emergency in an effort to keep everyone healthy and safe.
Columbia College Chicago closed its Chicago student housing earlier this week, and the situation in L.A. has compelled us to do the same for SiLA. We know for many of this is disruptive to your plans, jobs, and internships. These are difficult and uncharted times for everyone; we are committed to assisting you through this transition.
Here is what you need to know:
Students living in Park La Brea must vacate by Wednesday, March 25 at 5 p.m. local time, unless there are exceptional circumstances.
In light of the exceptional circumstances, and in recognition of the hardships the closure of student housing can cause, Columbia College Chicago will be providing an account credit to students who have a housing contract with Columbia for Park LaBrea housing for the Spring 2020 term.
Instruction will continue remotely for the rest of the semester. To help students juggle class and moving, online instruction will be more flexible so not everyone will need to be online and taking lectures at the same time; videos will be available for viewing on your own schedule.
The college is actively monitoring and responding to students at COVID19info@colum.edu. Or you can call with questions at (312) 369-INFO (4636) and speak with someone.
We are sorry your SiLA experience has been disrupted. As we mentioned in an earlier email, you are, and will forever be a part of the Semester in LA family. Be well.
