Semester in LA

Housing and Transportation

At orientation, you will receive a comprehensive package that will give up-to-date details on housing, transportation, what to bring, what to wear, what to expect when you arrive, and how to thrive in Los Angeles.

Housing

SiLA students are offered housing at Park La Brea, a gated community in the Miracle Mile district of Los Angeles, approximately two miles from Sunset Las Palmas. Centrally located, the 160-acre complex features lush grounds, outdoor cafes, a swimming pool, gym and numerous parks. This is one of Los Angeles’s most popular neighborhoods, with museums, shopping and entertainment within easy walking distance.

Apartments

Typically, you’ll be sharing a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment with other SiLA students. A SiLA staffer resides on site. Apartments come fully furnished and include linens, internet, cable television and kitchenware. Pets are not allowed.

A reserved parking space is available upon request. The gym and pool are available to use at an additional cost.

Process

Upon acceptance into the SiLA program, you’ll receive a housing application that specifies costs as well as move-in and move-out dates. The housing application records your interest in Park La Brea housing. Upon approval, you will be offered a binding housing contract that requires a commitment and a deposit.

During the Chicago Orientation, you’ll have an opportunity to meet and interact with potential roommates. Approximately two weeks prior to your arrival, you’ll receive your roommate assignment, along with both the physical and mailing address within Park La Brea. We do not assign people to specific rooms, only specific apartments.

Getting Around

SiLA will provide transportation to all sanctioned field trips and excursions to/from Sunset Las Palmas. If you are here for the summer program, you probably don’t need a car. However, if you are here longer, you might want access to a vehicle. Los Angeles is sprawling so whatever your mode of transportation, it will take time to get around.

Buses, subways, and ride-share apps are a viable option. In fact, Uber and Lyft are cheaper in Los Angeles than in Chicago, as long as you avoid “peak” hours.

Detailed information, along with rental car discounts, will be provided at orientation.
