Sound Opinions Prize

for continuing sophomore and junior undergraduate students

The Sound Opinions Prize was established to help support deserving undergraduate students studying English and Creative Writing defray the costs of tuition. The Sound Opinions Prize is awarded each year to the students with the strongest pieces of criticism written in the Reviewing the Arts Honors, Cultural Criticism and the Arts, and other Reviewing the Arts sections each spring.

• How to Apply

  No separate application is required for the Sound Opinions Prize.

  • Recipients are nominated by English and Creative Writing faculty.
• Scholarship Terms
  • Scholarships are awarded up to $5,000 awarded half in Fall and half in Spring
  • Scholarship is applied toward tuition only
  • Students' scholarships that are applied toward tuition may not exceed the amount of their tuition costs
  • Recipients must maintain full-time enrollment during the 2024-25 academic year
  • Outstanding documents to Columbia Central before the scholarship can be disbursed. Students can review missing documents in the MyColumbia portal under MyFinancials
  • Scholarship may be used toward a study abroad program through one of Columbia's student exchange programs, excluding Summer sessions. Please note: Recipients who enroll in an independent study abroad program will forfeit their scholarship during the semester spent abroad
  • The rules and regulations governing other sources of financial aid (federal, state, institutional and other grants, gifts, or loans) will apply
  • Columbia College Chicago reserves the right to withhold the award in any year in which, at the sole discretion of the scholarship committee, suitable candidates cannot be found among applicants

  The Degree Completion Assistance Grant provides financial support to juniors and seniors who are nearing graduation, and who can demonstrate that receiving assistance from the grant will help them in achieving their academic goals.
