Dale Washington Scholarship for the Arts

For continuing undergraduate students

The Dale Washington Scholarship for the Arts was established to assist in defraying tuition costs for students who demonstrate financial need and are studying visual arts or film at Columbia College Chicago.

  Please follow all directions carefully. Students must submit the following materials to make a complete Dale Washington Scholarship for the Arts application. There are two parts to the application:

  PART 1: ESSAY

  In a 500-word essay, describe your interest in your major and your academic goals, both for your time at Columbia and after you graduate.

  PART 2: STUDENT AID REPORT

  A current Student Aid Report (SAR) must be on file. To receive an SAR, students must complete a 2020-21 financial aid application (FAFSA) by July 1, 2020.

• About Dale Washington
  Dale Washington grew up in foster care on Chicago’s south side, graduating from Columbia College Chicago in 1986. He worked in advertising to support his artistic passions, with a resume that includes Chicago Public Schools, the Artist Resources in Teaching program, and the Hyde Park Arts Center. In 2012, Dale gave up his life in Chicago to board an Amtrak train bound for Portland and a whole new experience living among Portland’s homeless population, documenting his experiences through the lens of an artist. Dale passed away unexpectedly in February 2020, remembered fondly by his family, his friends, and those whom he inspired with his artistic perspective on the world. This scholarship is a testament to his legacy, and the hope that Dale will continue to inspire a new generation of artists.
• Scholarship Terms
  
  

  • Application must be submitted by the deadline (11:59 pm) for review by the committee
  • Award amount is up to $2,000, awarded half in Fall and half in Spring
  • Scholarship is applied toward tuition only
  • Students' scholarships that are applied toward tuition may not exceed the amount of their tuition costs
  • Recipients must be enrolled full-time during the Spring 2020 semester and must maintain full-time, undergraduate enrollment during the 2020-21 academic year
  • Recipients who graduate in Fall 2020 may be reviewed to receive the full scholarship amount in Fall 2020
  • Recipients must have submitted all outstanding documents to Columbia Central before the scholarship can be disbursed. Students can review missing documents in the MyColumbia portal under MyFinancials
  • Scholarship is limited to courses for which a student registers through MyColumbia and does not cover Columbia Online courses
  • Scholarship may be used toward a study abroad program through one of Columbia's student exchange programs, excluding Summer sessions. Please note: Recipients who enroll in an independent study abroad program will forfeit their scholarship during the semester spent abroad
  • The rules and regulations governing other sources of financial aid (federal, state, institutional and other grants, gifts, or loans) will apply
  • Columbia College Chicago reserves the right to withhold the award in any year in which, at the sole discretion of the scholarship committee, suitable candidates cannot be found among applicants
