Emergency Grants

For continuing undergraduate and graduate students

Emergency Grants are funded by the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund, which are federal stimulus dollars awarded to colleges under the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

Columbia is providing these stimulus funds to students via two Emergency Grant programs: Emergency Grant for Personal Expenses and Emergency Grant for Student Account Expenses. The student applying for an Emergency Grant will have the choice of applying for either or both programs.

Although any eligible student can apply for an Emergency Grant, the awarding committee will give preference to students who are determined to have the most exceptional financial hardship situations.

Basic eligibility criteria for both programs:

  • Enrolled on or after the national emergency declaration on March 13, 2020, and has eligible expenses that were incurred after this date
  • Self-identifies to a college employee that they are experiencing exceptional financial hardship
  • Completes an application attesting to exceptional financial hardship and provides a detailed request for assistance via the application

Emergency Grant for Personal Expenses—additional eligibility criteria:

  • Meets the basic eligibility criteria outlined above
  • Can attest to eligible personal expenses, including but not limited to: rent (not charged by Columbia); food costs; technology costs; transportation costs; books and course materials costs; childcare costs for the student’s dependent; medical costs for the student or the student’s dependent
    • Please note: the expenses must be incurred by the student and not the student’s family member

Emergency Grant for Student Account Expenses—additional eligibility criteria:

  • Meets the basic eligibility criteria outlined above
  • Has a past due student account balance for Summer 2020, Fall 2020, Spring 2021, Summer 2021, and Fall 2021
    • Please note: Fall 2021 student account balances do not qualify for funding until September 7, 2021

Grant Amount

Generally, the maximum a student can receive is $4,000 per Emergency Grant program. Award amounts will be determined by a committee and may exceed $4,000 per program for students with the most exceptional hardships.

Application and Emergency Grant Disbursement Process

Students experiencing exceptional financial hardship should email columbiacentral@colum.edu to provide a summary of their hardship situation and expenses. If a student’s situation appears to meet the qualifications for an Emergency Grant, a Columbia Central Counselor will provide the application for the Emergency Grant for Student Account Expenses and/or the Emergency Grant for Personal Expenses (depending on the student’s individual needs, request, and situation).

The student will electronically submit the Emergency Grant Application, which will be reviewed by a committee. The student will be notified of the committee’s decision within 15 business days via their Office 365 email account.

If a student applied for and is granted the Emergency Grant for Personal Expenses, the approved amount will be refunded to the student using their refund method on file in CCCPay.

If the student applied for and is granted the Emergency Grant for Student Account Expenses, the approved amount will be automatically applied to the student’s account balance due to Columbia and any funds in excess of the student’s account balance will be refunded to the student using their refund method on file in CCCPay.
