June S. Walters Scholarship

For continuing undergraduate students

The June S. Walters Scholarship for English and Creative Writing was established to assist in defraying the cost of attendance for a deserving undergraduate student majoring in the English and Creative Writing department.

• How to Apply

  Visit Internal Scholarships and click on APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS to access the June S. Walters Scholarship for English and Creative Writing application. Only complete scholarship applications submitted by the deadline will be reviewed by the scholarship committee.

  Please follow all directions carefully. Students must submit the following materials to make a complete June S. Walters Scholarship for English and Creative Writing application. There are three parts to the application:

   

  PART 1: CREATIVE SAMPLES

  Provide a sample academic essay (approximately 5 pages of rhetorical or literary analysis) or a sample of your creative work (ex. 10 double-spaced pages of fiction, 5-10 double-spaced pages of nonfiction, 10 individual poems), either by uploading them to the scholarship submission platform or by providing links to your work on online platforms.

  PART 2: ESSAY

  In a one- to two-page essay, discuss your academic, creative, and/or professional goals.

  Your essay must be double-spaced and must include your name and MyColumbia ID number in the upper right-hand corner of each page. Please upload your response in .pdf, .doc, or .docx format. 

  PART 3: FAFSA SUBMISSION SUMMARY

  A current FAFSA Submission Summary must be on file. To receive a FAFSA Submission Summary, students must complete a 2024-25 financial aid application (FAFSA) by March 1, 2024.

• About June S. Walters

  The June S. Walters Scholarship for English and Creative Writing was created by one of her six grandchildren, Rev. Chris Walters (1992), to celebrate her unconditional love and lifelong devotion to learning.

  June lived in Los Angeles and attended Los Angeles schools. She earned an undergraduate degree at the University of California – Southern Branch (now known as UCLA). She attended the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Southern California for graduate course work and then taught English in the Los Angeles school system for approximately 12 years (1926-1938), predominantly at Hollywood High School.

  In 1937 June married Otto Walters and raised two children, Linda and Peter. According to her son in his 9^th grade autobiography, “Trouble,” his mother June “was a champion pistol marksman with a .45 caliber automatic. She had medals to prove it. When I was young, I found a pistol in the closet. When this happened, she got rid of the firearm probably fearing an ‘accident.’ She coached the Hollywood High School pistol team. As the story goes, the team beat the Los Angeles Police department during a shooting match.”

  On October 22, 1960, Otto was tragically killed in the collision between the passenger vessel, Alcoa Corsair, and the Italian freight vessel, Lorenzo Marcello, in the port of New Orleans, along with four other passengers and five crew. June survived with relatively minor injuries. Before she married, June wanted to travel the world, but her father did not give his permission. After her husband’s tragic death, June traveled the world, visiting dozens of countries, including Russia and China in the 1960s.

  June was a volunteer Gray Lady with the American Red Cross for many years. She served the PTA, the Women’s Club of South Pasadena, and other associations. June was a devout Christian and member of San Marino Congregational Church.

  Chris remembers his Grandma June, with her horn-rimmed glasses hanging around her neck, as an avid reader, always humble, honest, kind, and never self-righteous. He loved visiting her in Southern California and searching her many books hidden behind mysterious mirrored accordion doors in her condo’s main hallway. Vast landscapes of knowledge spanned the shelves behind those mirrors, a wondrous place to stimulate a young child’s imagination.

• Scholarship Terms
  • Application must be submitted by March 1, 2024 (11:59 pm) for review by the committee
  • Award amount is up to $2,000, awarded half in Fall and half in Spring
  • Scholarship is applied toward tuition only
  • Students' scholarships that are applied toward tuition may not exceed the amount of their tuition costs
  • Recipients must maintain full-time enrollment during the 2024-25 academic year
  • Outstanding documents to Columbia Central before the scholarship can be disbursed. Students can review missing documents in the MyColumbia portal under MyFinancials
  • Scholarship may be used toward a study abroad program through one of Columbia's student exchange programs, excluding Summer sessions. Please note: Recipients who enroll in an independent study abroad program will forfeit their scholarship during the semester spent abroad
  • The rules and regulations governing other sources of financial aid (federal, state, institutional and other grants, gifts, or loans) will apply
  • Columbia College Chicago reserves the right to withhold the award in any year in which, at the sole discretion of the scholarship committee, suitable candidates cannot be found among applicants

  The Degree Completion Assistance Grant provides financial support to juniors and seniors who are nearing graduation, and who can demonstrate that receiving assistance from the grant will help them in achieving their academic goals.
