Nathan Breitling Poetry Fellowship

for continuing graduate students

The Nathan Breitling Poetry Fellowship was established to assist one talented MFA Poetry student each year in defraying tuition costs.

Extended Deadline to Apply: February 08, 2022

Application will be available October 2021. 

The Nathan Breitling Poetry Fellowship is open to:

  • Full-time graduate students in the MFA Poetry program who have completed at least one semester at Columbia by the end of the Fall 2021 semester
  • Students who have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher
  • Students able to submit creative samples of work in poetry

Note: Full-time Columbia employees, graduate students whose full tuition amount is covered by another source, and graduate students-at-large are not eligible for the Nathan Breitling Poetry Fellowship.

 Fellowship based on:

  • Academic merit
  • Demonstration of talent, ability, or accomplishment in poetry
Scholarship amount:
  • Previous amount was up to $2,750 (half awarded in Fall and half awarded in Spring)

    • Endowed scholarship award amounts are subject to change.
Notification of the scholarship:
  • Recipient will be notified by email in March 2022.
