Assistant Professor Gabriela Díaz de Sabatés Presents at Three International Conferences
Humanities, History, and Social Sciences (HHSS) Assistant Professor Gabriela Díaz de Sabatés gave three presentations over the summer at various international conferences. Her attendance was funded, in part, by Columbia’s HHSS Department and the Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office.
The first conference Díaz de Sabatés attended was the XXXVI International Congress of the Latin American Studies Association in Barcelona, Spain. The conference featured over 900 sessions that touched on fostering intellectual discussion, research, civic engagement, and teaching on Latin America and the Caribbean. There, Díaz de Sabatés presented her paper entitled “When Personal is Political: Feminist Testimonies on Violence and Social Change,” which examines feminist activism in Argentina following
Díaz de Sabatés also attended the International Oral History Association Congress on Memory and Narration in Jyvaskyla, Finland. The conference works to understand the nature of oral history by inviting presenters to engage with methodological issues surfaced with creation and investigation of oral history and biography. Her paper, “Applied Pedagogy to Arts and Design Students: Diversity, Gender, and Migrations,” was presented at the IX Ibero-American Conference on Design at the University of Palermo in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Díaz de Sabatés’ paper addresses teaching practices most effective for educating a diverse pool of art and design students, primarily focusing on strategies to promote creativity and interdisciplinary collaboration.
