2019 National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Scholar Erin McCarthy
Humanities, History, and Social Sciences Associate Professor Erin McCarthy has been accepted as a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Summer Scholar for the 2019 Summer Institute for College and University faculty, “Making Modernism: Literature and Culture in Chicago, 1893-1955.” The institute is a four-week program that “will explore Chicago’s vital contribution to the modernist movement, with particular attention given to literature and the visual arts.”
The NEH is one of the largest funders of humanities programs in the United States. The Endowment provides grants for top-rated proposals examined by panels of independent, external reviewers. NEH Summer Scholars of the “Making Modernism” Institute receive a $3,300 stipend. The Institute will “explore Chicago’s distinct literary and artistic culture as well as the city’s connections to other modernist metropoles.” The Institute will be held at the Newberry Library from July 8 through August 3.
