Paul Catanese's Artist-in-Residency at Colgate University
Photo: Jacob Boll '12 Art and Art History Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director in Fine Arts Paul Catanese was named the Christian A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation Artist-in-Residence at Colgate University for Spring 2019. The residency will culminate in a series of performances of the next phase of Catanese’s opera Century of Progress / Sleep. The opera is to be staged in the Ho Tung Visualization Lab / Planetarium Dome.
As part of this residency, Catanese will be forming an ensemble to “explore the geometric libretto for this opera from new angles, expanding the work from a solo performance into an arrangement for multiple voices and instruments.” Catanese’s ensemble will be joined by musicians Gemma Godfrey, Julie Licata, Evan Runyon, and Matt Sargent. In addition to these musical artists, Catanese will be working with the visualization lab staff and students to transform the campus planetarium dome into a live, visual instrument. The Christian A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation Artist-in-Residence is supported by the Colgate’s Christian A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation Artist-in-Residence Fund. The residency permits one or more artists or scholars in the areas of fine arts, music, and theater each academic year.
