Columbia College Chicago Music Department Announces New Practitioner-in-Residence in Vocal Studies

Music Instructor Typhanie Monique joins the Department as the new Practitioner-in-Residence in Vocal Studies.

The Columbia College Chicago Music Department is pleased to announce that vocal stylist and recording artist Typhanie Monique will be the Department's new Practitioner-in-Residence in Vocal Studies starting Fall 2020. Typhanie Monique teaches, manages, supports, directs, and integrates all aspects of Vocal Studies currently offered across the three undergraduate programs in the Music Department. She also coordinates the vocalists from the Theater Department who take their vocal lessons in the Music Department. In addition, Monique serves as a consultant for all vocal studies matters to our department's committees and task forces. She holds a Master of Music degree in Applied Vocal Pedagogy from Northeastern University and a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Business from Elmhurst College. Of her new role, Monique says, "As the newly appointed Practitioner-in-Residence, Coordinator of Vocal Studies, I intend to cultivate and deepen the vocal programs academic excellence and artistic integrity in contemporary commercial music styles and technique. The music department’s vocal studies program will lead the way in 21st century vocal instruction."

Monique has a diverse teaching background, and has experience teaching at premier institutions in Chicago, including Northwestern and DePaul as well as Columbia College Chicago. Interim Chair of the Music Department Sebastian Huydts notes: "Typhanie has been working as Adjunct Faculty in the Music Department at CCC for over eight years. She is held in the highest regard by her students and colleagues alike. We are truly excited about the many possibilities that her new appointment as Practitioner-in-Residence brings to the department, our students, and our curriculum. Typhanie is a passionate, accomplished scholar, performer and pedagogue, and with her appointment Vocal Studies has hit a homerun!"

Professionally, Typnaie Monique has performed at Chicago's Jazz Showcase and City Winery, Smalls Jazz Club and The Kitano in New York, The Jazz Kitchen in Indianapolis, The Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis and The Dakota in Minneapolis, and major outdoor festivals like Taste of Chicago, Isthmus Jazz Festival, SummerFest and the Chicago Jazz Festival. Internationally, she has performed in Ukraine, Russia and Columbia. She has shared the stage and recorded with many jazz luminaries, including Joe Lovano, Chris Potter, The Manhattan Transfer, Mavis Staples, Joel Frahm, Ken Peplowski, Victor Goines, Tony Monaco, Tom Kennedy, Dana Hall, and Ernie Adams. Her working quartet consists of Ben Lewis, John Tate, Dana Hall and Greg Artry.
