Columbia Joins ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge

Columbia College Chicago is proud to join the Chicago Campus Voting Challenge and the Illinois Campus Voting Challenge to increase civic engagement and civic education within the Columbia community.

Columbia College Chicago is proud to announce that the institution is joining the Chicago Campus Voting Challenge and the Illinois Campus Voting Challenge in Fall 2020.

The Chicago Campus Voting Challenge is a bipartisan initiative of Civic Nation, a collaboration between America's Urban Campus and the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge. The Illinois Campus Voting Challenge is likewise a partnership between the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge and Campus Compact Illinois.

These coalitions support colleges as critical places for civic education and political action.

This latest competition underscores Columbia College Chicago's committment to civic education. Columbia College Chicago is at the helm of an initiative of a 50-state voter-registration initaitive which began in 2019, and was spearheaded by Communication faculty member Sharon Bloyd-Peshkin, who is also deeply involved in the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge. Despite the pandemic, the 50-state voter-registration initiative will be rolling-out in full force in Fall 2020.

Columbia's initatives are in-line with the goals of this competition, according to Jennifer Domagal-Goldman, Ph.D., executive director of the ALL IN Challenge. As Domagal-Goldman has said, "Preparing students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences needed for their public lives as contributing members of our democracy and their professions has historically been a responsibility of higher education.”

Within the scope of this competition, there will be three award categories for 2 and 4 year institituions:

  1. Highest voter turnout
  2. Most improved voter turnout
  3. Highest rate of voter registration

Awards will be based on student participation in the 2020 election, and winners will be determined using data from the National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement.
