Columbia Wins Big at NAACP’s Image Awards

Rashid Johnson '00 took home an award for "Native Son" while Carl Seaton ’94, Lena Waithe '06, and Paul Garnes '96, HDR '16 were among the other nominees.

Several Columbia alumni were recognized for their work in film and television at last weekend’s Image Awards, which aired live on BET from Pasadena, California.

Winning big that evening was Rashid Johnson '00, who took home an award for Outstanding Directing in a Motion Picture (Television) for his film Native Son. Johnson was also nominated for Outstanding Television Movie, Limited Series or Dramatic Special.

Additionally, Carl Seaton '94 was nominated for Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series for Snowfall.

The Chi (Lena Waithe '06) and Queen Sugar (Paul Garnes '96, HDR '16) were both nominated for Outstanding Drama Series. Waithe’s Queen & Slim was also nominated for Outstanding Motion Picture and Outstanding Independent Motion Picture.

Shani Black '09 is a producer on Red Table Talk, which won for Outstanding Talk Series.
