Columbia’s second annual The Third Mask festival will be taking place online this year

The Third Mask: A Festival for New Devised Performance, one of Columbia College Chicago’s annual festivals, will be celebrated online this year. The festival, which is the collaborative work of students in Columbia’s Master of Arts Management (MAM), Arts Management BA, and MFA European Devised Performance Practice (EDPP) programs, provides a platform to explore movement-based theatre, concepts of the poetic body, and ensemble creation.

The festival will run from May 11 to May 15 and will showcase a new piece of devised work at 8 p.m. CT each evening that will be available for 24 hours on the festival’s website. Four of the five pieces will be video versions of their initial staged works, and the fifth and final piece will be a live, multi-camera production streamed on Friday, May 15 on YouTube. An encore performance for the following week is also scheduled to take place.

In addition, three virtual panel discussions will be streamed to coincide with the festival:
The Devising Process: 12 p.m. CT on Monday, May 11
Careers in Arts Festivals: 12 p.m. CT on Wednesday, May 13
Diversity and Inclusion: 12 p.m. CT on Friday, May 15

“This festival is the final project of our interdisciplinary Events Management: Practicum course that features the work of candidates for the MFA European Devised Performance Practice program,” says Mary Filice, Business and Entrepreneurship Chair at Columbia College Chicago. “We’re so proud of the outstanding work of our students and faculty, and see this as an example of the successful transition from the live to the virtual stage, which, in many ways, has resulted in reaching a broader audience while maintaining a deep level of engagement with all those participating.”
