The Chicago Headline Club’s Peter Lisagor Awards recognize Columbia College Chicago's student newspaper in the Best Email Newsletter and Best Campus Coverage categories.

The Chicago Headline Club recently announced the finalists for the 48th annual Peter Lisagor Awards, which included nods to “The Columbia Chronicle,” Columbia’s student-led news organization, in the categories of Best Email Newsletter and Best Campus Coverage by Student Journalists. The Lisagor awards represent the best journalism produced in Illinois and northwest Indiana in print, digital, and broadcast media. The Chicago Headline Club will announce the winners on May 9.

“The Lisagors are the top Chicago journalism honors,” says Jackie Spinner, faculty advisor for the “Chronicle” and a professor in the School of Communication and Culture

The “Chronicle’s” “Cafecito con La Crónica” and its then editor Doreen Abril Albuerne-Rodriguez were recognized in the best e-mail newsletter category. “Axios Chicago” and “Politco” were among the three finalists.

“It’s fantastic to see the 'Chronicle’s' Spanish-language newsletter as a finalist with two of the best professional news outlets in Chicago,” says Spinner.

“Both Axios and Politico are known for their newsletter content. Being a finalist with the Spanish newsletter is really a recognition of the inclusive coverage the ‘Chronicle’ has tried to provide with “La Crónica” since 2023,” she says.

The Chicago Headline Club also nominated the “Chronicle” for its coverage of Columbia’s financial deficit. The team behind the coverage included Patience Hurston, Vivian Richey, Araceli Ramirez, and Doreen Abril Albuerne-Rodriguez. Columbia was the only finalist in the Best Campus Coverage by Student Journalists category.

“The students’ important coverage of the college’s financial challenges was done professionally and accurately,” Spinner says. “Even as students, they produce high level journalism, and that’s something we are very proud of at the ‘Chronicle.’”
