College Targets Fall 2018 for New Student Center

New student center enters planning and development phase.

Columbia College is determined to complete a new student center by Fall 2018 so that this year’s incoming class will be able to experience its benefits as seniors. The student center is the college's top development project as envisioned by the 2015 Strategic Plan. Recently, the Board of Trustees approved a 9-week input phase with “Dream Out Loud” discussion sessions held across the college. In the opening week alone, more than 30 sessions were held with various student, faculty and staff groups across the campus to discuss programming for the center.

The center will be located centrally on the campus and will extend from Wabash to Holden court, running along 8th Street. The Papermaker’s Garden, currently occupying part of that lot, will be moved to the Sculpture Garden located adjacent to the college’s papermaking studios. Like many other organizations across campus, the Papermaker’s Garden team will be provided an opportunity to also “dream out loud” with the design firm Solomon Cordwell Buenz (SBC) about the possibility of a rooftop garden to be included as part of the student center.

The land on which the Papermaker’s Garden currently resides was originally donated to the college to build a student center and the college is excited to actualize the original purpose of the gift.

The college will be hosting more sessions to meet with SCB for this initial stage. The following times and locations have been established for students to discuss programming for the new student center.
