The Dance Center provides students with a superior contemporary dance education in the context of a world-class, nationally recognized dance performance season. Since its doors first opened in 1969, the Dance Center at Columbia College Chicago has presented more than 230 professional companies and choreographers. Among the important dance artists and companies who have enjoyed Chicago debuts at the Dance Center are Bill T. Jones, the Lyon Opera Ballet, Quasar Dance Company, Compagnie JANT-BI, Wayne MacGregor, Urban Bush Women and many others.
Home to one of the nation’s finest dance programs and one of Chicago’s premier presenters of contemporary dance, the Dance Center serves not only the college but also the greater Chicago dance community. In the Chicago Tribune's 2013 Top 10 dance performances list, two took place in the Dance Center, giving students the opportunity to interact with professional companies.
The Dance Center is a 33,000-square-foot, four-story art deco facility that includes a 268-seat performance space, six dance studios with sprung wood floors, dressing rooms, and locker rooms with showers. Through this state-of-the-art building and with technical staff, students have access to the technical aspects of dance performance—from learning how to work with a lighting designer to understanding video projection and even learning how to produce events.
Through its community outreach and education initiatives, the Dance Center seeks to deepen appreciation and understanding of contemporary dance and contribute to the health of Chicago communities. Columbia's distinguished Dance Presenting Series gives students further opportunity to learn from world-renowned performers and understand rigors of the discipline. These acclaimed dancers perform in the very same state-of-the-art facilities in which students practice, choreograph and perform.
