New work "Of Whales, Time, and Your Last Attempt To Reach Me" to debut at the Dance Center March 29-31.

“When I dance I am transfixed, simultaneously moving with radical attention and opening to the transformative phenomenon of being observed. I hope that my work invites the audience to experience more of themselves.”

Molly Shanahan

Choreographer Molly Shanahan will debut the world premiere of her new work, Of Whales, Time, and Your Last Attempt to Reach Me at Columbia’s Dance Center March 29-31. The ensemble piece explores “emotional ambivalence in a world of perception-altering technology and digitally-dependent relationships.” Defining Of Whales, Time, and Your Last Attempt to Reach Me is an underlying concept of an identity in flux as society works to adapt and expand in the presence of new technologies and media. Tickets can be purchased here.

Shanahan is the Artistic Director of Molly Shanahan/Mad Shak, the Chicago-based dance company she founded in 1994. The winner of two National Performance Network Creation Fund Awards, a Chicago Dancemakers Forum Lab Artist Award, and an Illinois Arts Council fellowship for choreography, Shanahan discards the rules of modern dance and “creates gorgeous organic phrases by observing motion at an atomic level.”

Shanahan will host a post-performance conversation March 29 and a pre-performance talk March 30 at 6:30. Shanahan will also host a workshop on the creative process behind Whales from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. March 30.
