John Fischetti Scholarship

for continuing undergraduate and graduate students

The John Fischetti Scholarship was established by the friends and colleagues of political cartoonist John Fischetti as a continuing tribute to his extraordinary talent. The scholarship is awarded annually to outstanding undergraduate and graduate Journalism and Photojournalism students.

Deadlines to Apply:

  • Scholarship for J-term/Spring 2019 Only (Undergraduate and Graduate Students): Deadline has been extended to December 3, 2018
  • Scholarship for 2019-20 Academic Year (Undergraduate and Graduate Students): February 1, 2019

 

The John Fischetti Scholarship is open to:

  • Full- or part-time undergraduate and graduate Journalism and Photojournalism students
  • Undergraduate students who began college at Columbia College Chicago must have completed at least 2 semesters at the time of application
  • Transfer students must have completed at least 1 semester at Columbia at the time of application
  • Students who have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in Journalism
  • Students who demonstrate outstanding achievement in print or broadcast journalism, photojournalism, editorial art, or political cartooning
  • International students may apply 
Scholarship based on:
  • Academic merit
  • Service in student's specialty (i.e. internships, contributions to student publications/media)
Scholarship amount:
  • Maximum of $5,000 

Notification of the award

  • All J-term/Spring 2019 scholarship applicants will be notified by email in December 2018.
  • All 2019-20 academic year scholarship applicants will be notified by email in March 2019.
How to Apply

J-term/Spring 2019 scholarship applicants: Go to the John Fischetti Scholarship - J-Term/Spring 2019 Application available online through your OASIS portal.

2019-20 Academic Year scholarship applicants: Go to the College-Wide Undergraduate or Graduate Scholarship Application available online through your OASIS portal. 

Only complete scholarship applications submitted by the deadline will be reviewed by the scholarship committee. 

Please follow all directions carefully. Students must submit the following materials to make a complete John Fischetti Scholarship application. There are four parts to the application:


PART 1: ESSAYS

You must submit both essays:

1. In a 500-word essay, describe why you are passionate about your discipline, who or what influenced your choice, and what your career goals are.

2. In a one-page statement, please address the following:

  • List your journalistic experience, including high school or college publications, broadcast stations, newspapers, magazines, online, internships, etc.
  • List your previous honors, awards, scholarships, etc.
Your essays must be double-spaced and must include your name and OASIS ID number in the upper right-hand corner of the page. Please upload your response in .pdf, .doc, or .docx format.

 


PART 2: WORK SAMPLES

Upload 3 samples of your best work. These can include clips from publications and online sites, scripts or audio files from television or radio, photos, cartoons, and graded classroom work. You must submit your sample in one of the following formats:

  • IMAGES: .jpg, .png, .gif
  • VIDEO: .mov, .wmv, .flv; or upload a .pdf, .doc, or .docx document with an external link to your video
  • AUDIO: .mp3
  • DOCUMENTS: .pdf

Please Note: Upload size limit is 50MB. 


PART 3: REFERENCES

Provide the names and email addresses of at least two Journalism faculty members who are familiar with your academic achievement or accomplishment in your major. 

The Scholarship Committee may contact your references regarding your application.

About John Fischetti

John Fischetti was a Pulitzer Prize winning political cartoonist who drew for the Chicago Sun, Chicago Daily News, Chicago Sun-Times, The New York Times, The New York Herald Tribune, and Stars and Stripes. As a long-time Chicagoan, Fischetti's work touched on local issues, but it also addressed national issues such as the Watergate scandal, the energy crisis, the economy, and terrorism. The John Fischetti Scholarship was established by the friends and colleagues of John Fischetti as a continuing tribute to his extraordinary talent.

Scholarship Terms
  • Application must be submitted by the appropriate deadline for review by the committee
  • Maximum scholarship amount is $5,000
  • Scholarship is applied toward tuition, fees, and other educational expenses
  • Students must be enrolled at the time of application and must maintain enrollment during the semester(s) the scholarship is disbursed
  • Students who breach Journalism's Academic Honesty Policy may forfeit their John Fischetti Scholarship
  • Scholarship is limited to courses for which a student registers through OASIS and does not cover Columbia Online courses
  • Scholarship may be used toward a study abroad program through one of Columbia's student exchange programs, excluding Summer sessions. Please note: Students who plan to enroll in an independent study abroad program will need approval from the Journalism Department before going abroad.
  • The rules and regulations governing other sources of financial aid (federal, state, institutional and other grants, gifts, or loans) will apply
  • Columbia reserves the right to withhold the scholarship in any year in which, at the sole discretion of the scholarship committee, suitable candidates cannot be found among applicants
