Civic Media Students Win Top Honors in the 2022 AEJMC Student Magazine Contest

Columbia graduate students Francia Garcia Hernandez and Jordyn Harrison recognized for stories written in Professor Sharon Bloyd-Peshkin’s Solutions Journalism class.

Francia Garcia Hernandez and Jordyn Harrison, students in the Civic Media Master of Arts program at Columbia College Chicago, won competitive awards in the 2022 Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (AEJMC) Student Magazine Contest.

Garcia Hernandez won second place in the “Profile” category for A Program for Youth Is Reshaping Arts Education in Chicago, a profile of  Yollocalli Arts Reach, an arts and cultural project of the National Museum of Mexican Art. Harrison won first place in the “Places” category for Growing Community in Vacant Lots, a story about Harambee! Gardens in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood.

Both stories were written in Sharon Bloyd-Peshkin’s Solutions Journalism class in Fall 2021. They were published in Yes! Magazine earlier this year.

AEJMC is a nonprofit, educational association of journalism and mass communication educators, students and media professionals. The Association’s mission is to promote the highest possible standards for journalism and mass communication education.
