CTVA Associate Professor to Discuss Her New Book on Diverse Screenwriting at the Chicago Cultural Center

Associate Professor Karla Rae Fuller will read from her latest book “Do the Right Thing: Five Screenplays That Embrace Diversity.”

Columbia Cinema and Television Arts Associate Professor Karla Rae Fuller will discuss her new book Do the Right Thing: Five Screenplays that Embrace Diversity at the Chicago Cultural Center on Friday, March 3 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The event will be hosted by the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE).  

The five films that Fuller will highlight in this talk are Moonlight, Get Out, Mudbound, Roma, and Always Be My Maybe. These five case studies focus on commercially successful and award-winning screenplays that resist stereotypes and present multi-dimensional depictions of historically underrepresented groups. 

Fuller will also highlight the cultural, social, and commercial value of diverse storytelling in today's changing film and TV landscape. The talk will incorporate video clips and audience questions throughout. Filmmakers and screenwriters, especially ones from historically underrepresented backgrounds, will leave further inspired to embrace their own unique voices. 

Before teaching at Columbia College Chicago, Fuller was director of feature film evaluation at Vestron Inc., which produced the hit movie Dirty Dancing, among others. She was also a freelance script reader for New Line Cinema, Miramax, and various other production companies.
