Columbia College Chicago is pleased to become the new home of Sound Opinions, a weekly hour-long music talk show with news, interviews, feature segments, and record reviews distributed to 150 Public Radio stations and available for podcast download.

Sound Opinions has a rich history in Chicagoland broadcasting. Formerly housed at WBEZ, for over twenty years and more than 1,000 episodes Sound Opinions has been one of the most influential radio programs in the music world. Every week hosts and nationally respected rock critics Greg Kot and Jim DeRogatis, Associate Professor at Columbia, engage in a passionate debate over the latest record releases, then feature conversations and performances with popular artists from across the musical spectrum.

Sound Opinions joins Columbia College Chicago through a generous gift from the Walter and Karla Goldschmidt Foundation. DeRogatis notes of the transition, “We are grateful for the support of the Goldschmidt Foundation and for helping to make this possible. We never run out of great sounds we're eager to talk about, and now we are especially excited to be able to build an educational component into the show for Columbia's students, giving them a chance to work on a show heard on 150 public radio stations nationwide weekly, with close to half a million downloads monthly via podcast on top of that, all before graduation!”

“We're honored to be working with Columbia College Chicago and WCRX,” says Kot. “A partnership with an educational institution steeped in arts and media education makes perfect sense for Sound Opinions, because we've always thought of our show as a way to deepen our listeners' appreciation and understanding of music, the people who make it, and the social and political conditions that shape it. To be able to bring students and faculty into that mix on a more immediate level is an opportunity we couldn't pass up.”
