Jeff Spitz Leads Students to Real Production Jobs With "The Doc Unit"

Cinema Art and Science associate professor Jeff Spitz directs students from Television, Journalism and Cinema Art and Science in Topics in Documentary: The Production Unit class (The Doc Unit). This non-traditional classroom experience, started by Spitz in 2013, provides on-the-job learning with real clients across Columbia's campus and Chicago. The class mixes undergraduate and graduate students who have developed several projects over the semester, including a web series for Lyric Opera, coverage for the ASL Poetry Slam event in February and a monthly showcase called The Doc Talk Show.

Cinema Art and Science student Myra Rivera’s latest project involving juvenile records and the need for a new automatic expungement system in Illinois was unveiled by the Children and Family Justice Center at Northwestern University Law School. Additional projects and videos by The Doc Unit can be seen on YouTube and Vimeo. The monthly Doc Talk Show serves as an open-mic event for filmmakers, professional and students who network and discuss non-fiction short films.
