About the Program
Curriculum
New Millennium Studies: The First-Year Seminar is an integral component of the Liberal Arts and Sciences core curriculum. By the academic year 2008-2009, the First-Year Seminar will be required of all new students.
New Millennium Studies is an integrative learning experience that provides the educational scaffolding for connecting authentically liberal learning with reflective and creative practice in the arts and media. Students grapple with difficult but important questions—concerning, for example, the role of education and art in society and the responsibilities of creators to their creations—with the aid of strategically chosen common texts. Over the course of the semester, each student creates a New Millennium Studies portfolio of artwork and accompanying writing. A selection of students' best work is showcased each semester at MilleFest.

Faculty Voices
Teaching Academy
New Millennium Studies is collaboratively developed and taught by faculty fellows from across the College - the NMS Teaching Academy. Comprising past, current, and future NMS instructors, the Teaching Academy provides an opportunity for faculty from across Columbia College Chicago's three schools and nineteen departments to come together to share their creative, scholarly, and pedagogical expertise. As the New Millennium Studies curriculum is in a constant cycle of assessment and development, the Teaching Academy also provides instructors the opportunity for curricular innovation and experimentation.
Faculty Advisory Board
The New Millennium Studies Faculty Advisory Board provides counsel on all aspects of pedagogy and curriculum. Its members are drawn from departments across the College.
